- Alpacas live for 15-25 years
- There are two types of alpacas Huacaya (wah-ki-ya) and Suri (sir-ee) Huacaya is the most common breed, They are the ones with the crimpy "teddy bear" look. Suri alpacas have long, silky dreadlocks.

- Alpacas are herd animals and need at least one other alpaca for companionship
- Alpacas are pregnant for 11 1/2 months, their babies are called cria and weigh on average 18 pounds at birth. they usually give birth during the day, most give birth easily without intervention. They very rarely have twins, and if they do they usually don't survive. Cria are weaned around 6 months.
- The most common noise alpacas make is a humming sound. They also have a shrill alarm cry to alert other herdmates of a threat
- Alpacas do spit, but rarely at people.
